When visiting South Korea, most people tend to think about places like Seoul, Jeju Island, and Busan. But have you heard about Incheon? I’m sure you know one of the largest airports in South Korea is in Incheon, but have you thought about Incheon as a place for sightseeing? Incheon is a great place to visit, during both summer and winter. Either for its varied options of things to do, either for the very beautiful landscapes that you can see by just walking. I visited Incheon with some friends during summer and in this post I would like to introduce that beautiful place to you. Today I will be introducing the Incheon Fairy Tale Village (송월동 동화마을).
How to get there
First off, getting to Incheon is very easy, once you can just go by subway (the last station of line blue). Most of the sightseeing spots in Incheon are close to each other, so you can just walk around from one spot to another. To get to the small islands around Incheon you will need to take a bus, but don’t worry too much! It’s easy, safe, and cheap to get wherever you want. Besides, locals are very warm-hearted and will help you with whatever information you need: even if you don’t speak Korean, you can be sure that they will try their best to communicate with you. This was one of the very best things about Incheon!
Entrance fee and opening hours
Coming back to the Fairy Tale Village, it’s free entrance and it’s open all year long every day (although you might want to avoid going on Thursdays because most of the commerce is closed). The best days to go are definitely weekends, once it’s more crowded and therefore there will be more local commerce stores and shops opened for you to discover! The Fairy Tale Village of Incheon was a project of renovation of Incheon after the area of this village was left stagnated due to people moving out. The renovation of this area of Incheon consisted basically in the painting and decoration of the area with fairy-tale themed things.
What can you do at Incheon Fairy Tale Village?
It’s actually extraordinary how they managed to create such a pretty place. As mentioned, the village is nothing more than a regular neighborhood that was revitalized for the sake of the city. It attracts tons of visitors every year, and the view is totally worth it! The whole place is painted accordingly to Fairy Tale stories we know and love, and you can play around trying to find references for each fairy tale portraited in the village.
The feeling you get when walking around is that you’re in a parallel and magical reality. You will see how detailed they were while doing everything because every single part of the village seems to be well planned and thought. It’s a short walk to get to know everything, around 10 minutes. I would recommend you visiting the village in a day with plain temperature. Since Incheon is a coastline city, the temperature tends to be higher than in other cities, the thermal sensation is also higher. So prepare your sunscreen and choose a day that’s either not too hot or too cold, so you can fully enjoy your walk through the fairy tale village.
What to eat in Incheon Fairy Tale Village?
The fairy tale village also offers a lot of local businesses and shops you can support: from some traditional food to delicious homemade ice cream. One food in special fought my attention: the dolphin pizza. It’s a place where they sell an unconventional pizza. It resembles a lot what we know as a swiss crepe, but in the shape of a dolphin (which perfectly matches the whole atmosphere of the place!)
It’s a great place to visit for pretty much everyone: if you are going alone and just want to enjoy a nice view and a magical atmosphere; if you are visiting with your family and want to go somewhere your kids will love; or even if you are going with your friends and just want to collect some precious memories with them.
My Tips
Personally, what I liked the best about the Fairy Tale Village was the various spots thought for taking pictures. Like many places in Korea, the Fairy Tale village had a lot of nice backgrounds and interactive scenarios that worked just perfectly for that nice Instagram picture about your trip. It is also very easy to find public bathrooms around the area – clean and safe public bathrooms, obviously also decorated with several fairy tales themed decorations. Last but not least, when you reach the highest point of the village if you look to the horizon, you will have a beautiful and relaxing view of the sea.
If you have read this far, I hope that you are already planning your trip to Incheon in order to see their beautiful Fairy Tale Village!
