Hot summer… What can be better than spending time on the beaches with loved ones? South Korea is surrounded on three sides by water, giving it plenty of beaches in a variety of shapes and sizes that offer a welcomed escape from everyday life. Be sure to check out at least one of the coastal destinations before the official summer beach season comes to an end. Beaches along the western coast are easily accessible from Seoul. Hence they are extremely popular among locals and travelers who may not have a lot of time on their hands. Daecheon Beach is the largest beach on the west coast.

Daecheon Beach

Daecheon Beach, located in Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do, is a 3.5 kilometer-long, 100 meter-wide sandy beach. It is famous for its white sand mostly made from shells (instead of silica, like most beaches). In particular, it is also home for the annual Boryeong Mud Festival.

Boryeong Mud Festival

In case some of you do not know about the Boryeong Mud Festival, pieces of information are attached as follows.

• The Boryeong Mud Festival is an annual festival that takes place during the summer in Boryeong.
• The first Mud Festival was in 1998 and, by 2007, the festival attracted 2.2 million visitors to Boryeong.
• The mud is taken from the Boryeong mud flats, and trucked to the Daecheon beach area, where it is used as the centerpiece of the ‘Mud Experience Land’.
• Although the festival takes place over a period of around two weeks, it is most famous for its final weekend, which is popular with Korea’s western population. The final weekend of the festival is normally on the second weekend in July.

My Experience in Daecheon

I had heard a lot about the Boryeong Mud Festival, but I had no idea what Boryeong looks like. Also, I was confused at first because some people would call it “Daecheon” instead of Boryeong. Well, I would just assume that it is called after its most famous beach.

When I was about to visit Daecheon, I was skeptical about whether it would be a place my friend and I would like. However, all my doubts faded away once I saw the golden sand of Daecheon Beach and blue waves of the Yellow Sea.

My friend and I spent approximately an hour taking thousands of pictures under the big hot sun before we moved to another destination.

Gangs Coffee 갱스커피

The cafe is somewhere in the middle of the mountains near to Daecheon Beach. I guess it might be hard to get there if you do not own a car. It is strongly recommended to take a taxi from Daecheon Beach. Luckily my friend is Korean and he drove me there. The cafe is spacious and the scenery is so pretty that I kept taking pictures. Wanna take an Instagram-worthy picture? Then do not hesitate to visit Gangs Coffee!

Uyu Changgo 우유창고

Then, my friend suggested visiting one of the hottest dessert places in Daecheon. The milk-carton-shaped giant building caught my eyes once we reached there. It is a dairy outlet featuring organic items.

Guess what? There are always rooms for dessert! I ordered their signature icecream for 4,100 KRW. The ice cream was simple and really satisfying. The great thing about this farm is that there are many Instagram-worthy spots. There is also a small petting zoo area where kids can interact with rabbits, goats, and calves.

Grilled Clams 조개구이 for dinner

Before going back to Seoul, we headed back down to the beach for some grilled clams. Seafood restaurants by Daecheon Beach have assorted clams with many side dishes! You may choose according to your preference. Any shop is good. However, some shops do not serve solo diner, so bear in mind if you are traveling alone. The shop we visited was Som-gwa-som-sai (섬과섬사이).
